What Will My First Meeting With a Bankruptcy Lawyer be Like?

6-Debt-Payment-Ideas-That-Does-More-Harm-Than-Good

If you are thinking about filing for Bankruptcy, you will need professional guidance.  That means you will need a lawyer to help you and guide you through the process.

I make it a point to initially meet with all my clients.  My initial consultation is free.

I realize I am meeting with people who are going through high levels of stress and hardship.  Sometimes people are scared or intimidated in meeting with a lawyer.  I understand this and try to make that first meeting as pleasant as possible.

Therefore, I try not to be so “lawyerlike” in the initial consultation.  I try to dress pretty casually, and put people at ease.  I understand what people are going through, and I want them to be as comfortable as possible.

During the consultation, we will discuss your financial situation and what happened in your life to cause you problems.  We will go over your financial situation as it stands that day.  I will ask you questions about your assets, your debts, your regular monthly income, and your regular monthly expenses.  The consultation should not last more than an hour.

It is helpful to bring some documents with you.  If I can get accurate information right from the outset, the whole process is much easier.  The more accurate we can be at the earliest time is very important.  Some important documents that are useful are mortgage or car loan statements, credit card statements, and even utility bills.  If you have recently pulled your credit report, this can be very helpful as well.

However, if you do not have this information at the initial consultation, do not worry.  As long as you have good estimates for the numbers we should be alright.  We will have plenty of time later to get the true and accurate numbers.

After assessing the information, I may be able to give you a tentative course of action – for instance what bankruptcy chapter would be good for you.

It is very important you be as honest and truthful right from the start.  The process really requires that both attorney and client are honest and forthright with each other from the beginning.  Then a good relationship is fostered and there are no surprises down the road.

If you are experiencing financial hardship, such as burdensome credit card debt or are facing a foreclosure – don’t wait!  It can really cost you.  It does not hurt to get a consultation from a qualified bankruptcy lawyer.  It can really save you in the long run.

If you find yourself too deep in debt, and cannot possibly pay your bills, I can help.  If you are facing a foreclosure, utility shut off, or lawsuit, I can help.  Please call my office at (814) 240-1013 with your questions.  The first office consultation is free and payment plans are accepted.
